Bad news guys. WhatsApp no longer has your back. In a recently published report 'Who Has Your Back?', the Electronic Frontier Foundation found WhatsApp lacking across all benchmarks, laid down to ensure user privacy and data protection.
As the most loved "cross-platform" mobile messaging app, WhatsApp has failed to deliver on five variables that, according to the EFF, include:
1. Following industry-wide best practices on data security.
2. Sending notifications to users as and when government requests their data.
3. Maintaining transparency on company data retention policies. 4. Disclosing government requests on removing specific content. 5. Publicly opposing back-doors that allow government access to user data. Here is the full list of rankings of some of the biggest names in technology.
According to the EFF, WhatsApp was given an entire year to up its game and adopt the "best practices" given in this report. However, the company failed to pay any heed to this advice and landed up rubbing shoulders with other 'worst of the worst' technology giants such as AT&T and Verizon. Apple was one of the few that ranked among the top on all given criteria. Other names that achieved full score include Dropbox, Adobe, Yahoo, WordPress, and Wikimedia. If you're flaring up your WhatsApp right now to do a quick uninstall, you are not alone.
